I just filled up my car this morning and it cost me $69 to fill up 16.6 gallons on my 1996 Ford Explorer. The gas was $4.139 a gallon. Sheesh.

On the way home, I saw a car with those ridiculously sized wheels. You know, the 24 inch rims, that makes the car look silly. But then I was thinking, what mileage does he get with those wheels? The wheels are larger than the standard wheel size. Even though they do it for style, maybe they are getting an added benefit without even thinking about it. I wonder how 30 inch rims would look like on my Explorer =)

I have ice in my freeze. Wait a minute! What’s more useful, ice in my freezer or on Mars. Well I can’t get to Mars with the mileage I get out of my Ford Explorer, and the ice in my freezer I can use now, so I guess the Mars’ ice amounts to …. nothing.

=-)

Kidding! Before all you science geeks come after me with pitchforks and Bunsen burners, I was kidding. Joke. Anyways. The significance of the ice is tremendous. Where there’s water, there’s possibly life, or what may have been life at some point in Martian history. There’s a possibility that microbes can still exist on Mars now, and could be living.

Translation, we could find life on a world, other than our own, still alive! Maybe the organisms have been active all this time. We don’t know yet, and I’m sure it’ll be awhile before we do. This is definitely great news.

I use PuTTY, a free telnet/ssh terminal client, daily when I work on my Windows machine. My only complaint about this is that I have to look at multiple windows. When I program from home, I use my Linux box and use Gnome terminal, which has multiple tabs, so things are much easier to manage.

Fortunately, there are two options for Windows users to have the same effect.

Option 1: PuttyTabs
http://www.raisin.de/putty-tabs/putty-tabs.html
PuttyTabs does something close to what I get with Gnome Terminal. What it does is it creates a standalone application that is like a toolbar that floats on the screen. You can position it anywhere on the page. It’s similar to the toolbars of Windows. It’ll create a tab for each PuTTy window you have open. This was the first one I used. It works nicely but not exactly what I wanted. Fortunately I found something better.

Option 2: WinTabber
http://www.wintabber.com/
WinTabber is a program that is designed for almost any application and allows you to group them all into a tabbed window. The way it works is you log into all the boxes you using PuTTy, then you start up your WinTabber program and add all your PuTTY sessions to WinTabber, and that’s it. You can even reorder the tabs how ever you like.

I find it a to be a better option over PuttyTabs. WinTabber is simpple, integrates easily, and is clean.

Bloging: New blogging system in place. Either wordpress or something homebrewed.

Photos: My photos will go live. Either homebrewed or Picasa from Google of Flickr. I have plenty of old photos I would like to post, like that famous Alaskan trip from 2001. *gasp*

Writings: This will be articles and ramblings from me that will include technology, web development, computers, and any other hobbies and work related stuff I’m into at the moment.

Links: This will be a database of links of places I frequent online.

About: information about me, what else.

Steve Jobs' idea of a killer machine will revitalize the PC consumer market and cause consumers to buy new machines.... NOT!" Continue reading →

I’m reading through a NYTimes article about apple’s new annoucements of their product lines including their new G5 machines, due out this August.

A funny thing in the article, is Steve’s idea that “the new processor would allow personal computer users to have access to more than four gigabytes of memory, which is the limit for today’s 32-bit processors. That expansion, he said, will make the personal computer market grow again”. *stratching head* The last time I heard of the common computer users (the ones who use it for general purpose stuff, not the overclockers/nerds/geeks/programmers/etc) adding RAM to the full capacity of their machines is pretty much rare! Those who even knew the max their machine could take is rarer still. *sarcasm* Wow I could really use a dual processor machine with 4GB of Ram to… write an email… or browse the web… with umm…. the SAME FRIGGIN’ QUALITY AND SPEED I NORMALLY DO! Ok, many the apps will load just a little faster.

C’mon here. The only people who would benefit from the new machines are those doing high end stuff. And it’s still to be seen if it can even outpace an intel machine. I saw an interesting follow up to Apple’s published reports of it’s winning speeds. The reports go into details how apple gave their machines an advantage in the software configuration.

In the article is steve says ” In dual-processor applications the new Apple systems are more than twice as fast as a comparable system from Dell Computer.” What’s comparable, a P4, 2.5Ghz? Now *rolling up sleeves*, lets get a dual processor machine and see the results then.
