Oh so fun. Well this week I plan on doing one major renovation to my house. I have this ugly terracota/terrazo flooring that was poorly installed by the previous owners. They tried, but it just didn’t work out. The tiles aren’t properly aligned so the tiles are all offset from the next. I have grout borders by the walls thicker than my thumb! Worst yet, they installed the flooring after they did the baseboards, so I can’t remove the baseboards at all!. Add on the fact that the tile is at a higher level than the rest of the flooring so going with an option of pouring cement over the tile is not advisable. And the square footage I need to work on is about 500 sq ft. This should be fun. =)

I will rent a hammer chisel to power through those pesky tiles. I’m also calling up 1800GotJunk to pick up the mess I leave behind, and I’m getting laminate flooring. The laminate installation should be pretty simple, and the particular model of flooring I’m getting is so simple to join, you just tilt one piece into the other at an angle, and press down, that’s all. It’s great. I got a sample of one and I was just amazed by the simplicity. Once I get this done, I will finally be mostly happy with the house. I still have other projects to do, but this will be the major one.

As for the other projects that are completed, or near completed, they include:

  • My office:
    • I removed the old carpeting and installed the new flooring all by myself.
    • I got the walls mostly painted, thanks to my girlfriend.
    • I still have to install the baseboards and molding in the room.
    • I still need to redo the closet doors and the door to the room. The door to the room definitely needs a new coat of paint.
  • 3rd bedroom:
    • I removed the old carpeting and installed the new flooring all by myself.
    • I got the walls mostly painted, thanks to my girlfriend again. I just have a few spots that need a second coat of paint.
    • The baseboards are molding are mostly done, I just have a few sections to finish, and clean up the seams.
    • I still need to redo the closet doors and the door to the room. The door to the room definitely needs a new coat of paint.
  • Master Closet:
    • I repainted the closet, and installed the flooring myself.
    • I installed the ClosetMaid Selectives closet system on one side. I still have another side I want to install.
  • Living Room:
    • Fresh coat of paint. I think I missed a few spots though. =)

So I’ve at least done a number of things in the house, so I’m happy about that. I will post some pictures shortly.
