Finally, someone decided to make the game we’ve all been waiting for, based on the G1 version of the transformers we remember from the 80s cartoons. Game play will be based on the planet Cybertron, the home of the autobots and decepticons.

The story line for the game will be split between the Autobots and Decepticons. You can play either or both paths. Playable characters include Optimus Prime, Ratchet, Bumblebee, Megatron, Starscream and Brawl.

The official website is at: http://www.transformersgame.com/.

Below is a teaser/reveal trailer. No gameplay, just cinematics, but still pretty cool.

I tried out Wits & Wagers for XBL. The concept of the game is a series of questions, and for each question you guess what the the closest answer is without going over that actual value. Then you see all the answers selected by all the users, and you place bets on the closest answer to the real answers without going over the real answer. The person with the highest number of chips at the end wins. It’s a fairly simple game, with a number of features thrown in just for eye candy that I found the game to be not worth it. You may want to check it out, but was a bit disappointed by it, and have decided to not get the game and I removed the demo from my computer.

It’s not worth 800 points. I think there are a few people who may like it, but honestly, get Scene It! instead.

I tried out the demo version of Rocky & Bullwinkle for XBL this weekend. It’s listed as a party game, so I thought it might be something my girlfriend and I might enjoy. We both enjoy playing “Scene It!” and are glad to hear a new version is coming out at the end of the year. So when I saw this as a party game, I figured I would give it a try.

I played it for about 5 minutes… It sucked! Seriously. This is a series of mini games to play, oh should I say microgames. The games are so short, and in some cases, not well designed that I’m just like “WTF”. I game mechanics are overly simplistic and you don’t feel like you’re getting any level of enjoyment out of it. You would think that have a brand like Rocky and Bullwinkle, they would do something a little more creative and interesting. Unfortunately they do not.

After a few minutes, I removed the game from my harddrive. What a shame. It’s 800 points to get the full game. Umm, don’t, really, don’t.

Last night I went on Xbox Arcade/Live, and downloaded the trial version of Braid, this beautiful game that is a mix of adventure, storytelling and puzzles. It’s like playing a game made of paint. The visuals are like a water color painting. I was absolutely impressed by the visuals alone.

And the game play is interesting and great. Instead of having multiple lives and repeating a level, you manipulate time. So say you’re running along in an area, and you try to knock out an enemy character and mis the mark, and you get hit instead, or if you fall down into a pit of spikes, you can reverse time to work your way back to a safety point and try again. It forces you to learn a strategy of manipulating time to solve the board. There’s an example on one board where you have to go into the pit and get a key, but the pit has no way to get back up. The good thing is, this is a special key that you can carry when you reverse time. You jump into the pit, get the key, and reverse time to get back to a point before you jumped into the pit, but this time you have the key. It’s brillant. It reminds me of Prince of Persia – Sands of Time, but in that game, the ability is limited in the number of times you can use it.

There is also another game play experience that depending on the direction you walk in, you can move time forward or backwards, and if you don’t move at all, or just move vertically up or down, time stops. It definitely makes for some more challenging game play.

Many people love the game, but the biggest complaint right now is the price for some people. It will cost you 1200 points on XBL. That’s right 1200 points. Now, a number of games charge 800 points, that’s about $10, but a game at 1200 points works out to $15. Honestly, I don’t have a problem paying for a game that is worth it, and to me, so far, this game is worth it.

I’ve purchased Puzzle Quest, and have put in quite a number of hours in the game, and it costed me about 800 points. I’ve also purchased a number of other games in that price range, and I haven’t touched them in some time. So the argument that some have about the game being too expensive seems to be more a matter of distorted perspective. Distorted in the fact that a game, in general, can run from $10 in the bargin at a store, to $20 for a “classic” game, to $50-$70 for a brand new game. Just because a game is a downloadable, doesn’t make it less in value. If I can get an entire game like say Virtual Fighter 5 for XBL, should I complain if the price is over 1200 points? Absolutely not, because I’m getting the entire game. It’s real world value should at least be a little lower than if I were to buy it in the stores for a physical copy, because there are additional costs going into manufacturing a product with a physical disc, manual and box.

Overall, the criticisms on the price are the result of what people are used to. Once you try the game, I think you will have a different opinion and find the cost justifiable.

I saw a story on digg today about Star Trek Online, the new mmo based on the Star Trek universe, is seeing the light of day again, after an initial failure in development.
On August 8th, 2008, they released a game trailer for the game. You can download the trailer at: http://www.startrekonline.com/videos

I’m a fan of the franchise, and have a number of their games for the PC. I still play Star Trek Armada, with the Millenium Project Mod, and still enjoy it. The AI can be a little dumb even when you have it on medium, and the borg ships are quite large, and can have difficulty moving around the field of play, but I still enjoy it.

I really hope this mmo is going to be something of value. I’ve played Star Wars Galaxies in the past, but after a while, the game felt more like work, than a game when I had an Armorsmith and a Tera Kara Artist. I was managing two stores, and setting up a third, mining for resources, building armor with what felt like a given 17% failure rate built into the game, and travelling from planet to planet, while playing two wookie characters; yeah it definitely felt like work.

I’m curious to see how the game play will be for the Star Trek game. I’m hoping for something really nice. Would be nice to fly around the galaxy in a big ship. =)
