How to unbrick a Linksys Router.

Over the weekend, I was at my girlfriends place, and she was having issues with one of her computers with it’s wireless connection. The computer would lose it’s connection at random times. So I thought it’s either with the DHCP leasing times or maybe the firmware of the router needs an update because of the usb wireless device she’s using with the computer in question. I noticed she had an older firmware, so I figured, let me update that. Well, someone it got bricked in the process. The router was unresponsive, and had a blinking power light, and could not be pinged. Man I was pissed.

Improving the performance of a website for a VPS: MySQL

I’m running this website, and others, on a VPS hosted at VPSLink. For those who don’t know, a VPS (Virtual Private Server) is a “fake” server that is partitioned off of a real server. For example, say you have this big beefy box with 16GB of RAM, over 1 Terabyte of disk space, Dual Processors with Dual Cores. Sounds pretty nice. Well you could if you wanted to, segment the server into small servers by creating these smaller servers virtually. Through the use of software like OpenVZ or XEN you can do exactly this. You can take a beefy server and make multiple servers out of it. It’s different from shared hosting where you share resources with other sites on a server. With a VPS, you get a dedicated portion of the resources, or a slice of the box. It works out great if you want to have a server with it’s own resources to get around the issues of shared hosting, but not spend the full cost of full server like with a dedicated server. So that’s a VPS, and back to my problem.

WordPress Tip: Using the More Link

I was noticing in the wordpress admin, that you can add a more link. This more link is very useful. Have you ever been to a website an noticed that each blog posting just runs on and on? Well some of the postings on my own site have been very long, and I don’t really like that. I want them to be more of an intro text on the homepage, with a link to read more. Here’s an example.

Lots to do this week

Ah, another week. Oh so fun. Well this week I plan on doing one major renovation to my house. I have this ugly terracota/terrazo flooring that was poorly installed by the previous owners. They tried, but it just didn’t work out. The tiles aren’t properly aligned so the tiles are all offset from the next. I have grout borders by the walls thicker than my thumb! Worst yet, they installed the flooring after they did the baseboards, so I can’t remove the baseboards at all!. Add on the fact that the tile is at a higher level than the rest of the flooring so going with an option of pouring cement over the tile is not advisable. And the square footage I need to work on is about 500 sq ft. This should be fun. =)

Amazing Software to enhance video with the user of still photography

This software is amazing. The things it can do are great. In short, think of a software package that can take your crappy looking video, that may have over or under exposed areas in a scene, or something in the frame that you don’t want. Now take a high quality photo of the area you just filmed, mix the two together, and get a far better video. I have oversimplified the explanation here, but take a look at the links and you will gain a better understanding of what I mean.
